What's the difference between moving company and moving broker?

A moving company is someone you book a move with, and they are involved with your move every step of the way. They own a fleet of trucks and employ their staff. They are licensed and fully insured. If something goes wrong with the move the company is liable for the damage. Most moving companies are based locally, and you will have a move coordinator to help with any questions. Using a moving company ensures consistent experience through the entire process.

Moving brokers are middlemen. Brokers are a sales team that book your move and sell it to an actual moving company. While this may seem like the easy way to go, in the end it may not work out. One of the reasons a broker may not work out is they are not liable for damages. Brokers can't always answer questions as many operate out of a call center.· The movers aren't always vetted. Finally, some moves through a broker end up costing more than what was quoted or estimated, and homeowners have no choice but to pay the increase to get their items. Basically, holding you hostage.

Never hire a mover who doesn't follow FMCSA guidelines.

What is FMCSA? Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration  They are a federal government agency responsible for regulating moving companies and providing safety oversight of commercial vehicles.
